Press Release - Hugh Callaghan RIP

June 8, 2023 Prisoners

The Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas (ICPO past and present) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hugh Callaghan - one of the six innocent men imprisoned in 1975 following their false convictions for the 1974 Birmingham pub bombings.

The ICPO was actively involved in the campaign to have the men released, attending both the 1987 and 1991 appeals. Billy Power, another of the Birmingham Six, had this to say of his friend: "Hugh was not a bitter person. He was able to move on from the horror of being falsely imprisoned for nearly seventeen years. Hugh was forgiving and lived happily. He was a gentle soul who will leave a gaping hole in the lives of those close to him".

Hugh is the second of the Birmingham Six to die - Richard McIlkenny having passed away in May 2006. The ICPO (past and present) extends its deepest sympathy to his partner, Adeline and daughter Geraldine.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
